Board and Train for Queens Dog Owners

Queens is the largest borough by area, so your block might look like a village street, a tower block or a leafy suburb.

Queens is coextensive with Queens County and is described as a patchwork of dozens of neighborhoods. That variety shows up in dog life: a Forest Hills apartment, a rowhouse near Queens Boulevard and a detached home near the Nassau line each need different training priorities. Write down your own daily routine before talking with any trainer, then ask how the stay will reflect it. General estimates run about $1,500 to $2,500 or more for a stay.

For walks, Forest Park covers about 543 acres in central Queens and includes a large wooded area with trails, near Kew Gardens, Woodhaven, Richmond Hill and Forest Hills. Alley Pond Park, between Douglaston and Bayside, adds wetlands and marked trails, and Flushing Meadows Corona Park is another large option. Posted rules vary, so read the signs.

Queens streets also come with the roar of the Grand Central Parkway and airport traffic overhead. Ask a trainer how they build calm around sudden noise, and make sure handoff lessons cover the sounds your dog actually hears at home.

Parking, driveways and attached houses are common in the eastern parts of the borough, while towers and walk-ups fill the west. If your dog meets visitors at a shared hallway, say so up front. A trainer can build a greeting routine for a hallway or a garden gate, whichever you actually have.

Before you book. Three steps.

  1. Write down what you want to change, such as leash pulling or door barking, before you contact anyone.
  2. Ask any trainer where your dog would stay and whether they travel to Queens for handoff lessons.
  3. Plan short daily practice around Forest Park and Flushing Meadows Corona Park once your dog is home.

Good questions

Before you begin.

Does a stay price change depending on borough?

It can. Travel, pickup and the trainer's own rates all play a part, so ask for the full cost in writing.

Where can I practice leash walking?

Large parks with trails are common choices. Check posted rules and pick quiet hours.

Is a stay right for an anxious dog?

Not always. Ask the trainer how they would approach your dog's worries.

Do the borough's long distances matter?

Yes. Travel time can affect pickup, drop-off and handoff lessons, so ask early.
